What is a chaukhat?

A chaukhat is the fixed wooden frame around a door or window opening. A door frame usually has two vertical sides and a top piece; some designs also have a bottom piece (threshold). Window frames are four-sided and are often made with space for grills, glass or shutters.

Which wood is used for frames?

• Sagwan (teak): durable and stable, naturally resists moisture and termites — a premium choice, especially for main doors and exterior windows.
• Other woods such as Chap are also commonly used for frames, depending on budget.
• For interior rooms, an economical wood with good seasoning and finish can be enough.
• Whatever the wood, it should be straight, well-seasoned and free from large cracks.

How to measure for a frame

• Opening height and width — measure the wall opening at more than one point, as walls are not always perfectly square.
• Wall thickness — the frame depth should suit the wall.
• Which way the door will open (left or right, inside or outside).
• Number of frames of each size — note each opening separately.
• For windows: whether you want grills, glass shutters, mesh or all of these.
